The read

## What Basil does

CoralTree Tech spent more than a decade selling Qbox, the file-locking service that let two bookkeepers share a QuickBooks Desktop company file without corrupting it. Basil is the San Jose company's second act, and it is aimed squarely at the price-sensitive end of practice management. Simple is $15 per team member per month, Advanced is $45, both month to month with no contract, both with unlimited clients, and a 15-day trial runs without a card. At those numbers a four-person firm gets a portal, document management and workflow for less than the cost of one seat on several competitors.

The feature that most justifies the price is e-signature. Basil includes unlimited signatures with knowledge-based authentication, the identity check the IRS requires on remote 8879 signing, rather than metering them or charging per KBA transaction as most competitors do. A firm signing four hundred returns a season can model that saving directly. The rest is conventional and competent: a branded portal where clients upload documents, sign and pay through Stripe, visual pipelines for tax prep and onboarding that trigger tasks automatically, in-browser editing of Office files with version history, per-task time tracking that turns into invoices, internal chat, Gmail and Outlook integration, and iOS and Android apps.

The trade-offs are the ones a low price usually implies. Storage is capped at 25 GB on Simple and 50 GB on Advanced, which a firm with years of scanned source documents will hit. The integration list is short: QuickBooks Online, Google, Outlook, Stripe, and nothing else, with no connection to Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or ProSeries, so return status is tracked separately from where returns are prepared. CoralTree publishes a status page for Basil but no security documentation behind it, so there is no SOC 2 report, no encryption statement and no MFA policy to point a client at. Data sits on AWS in the US. Anything more specific has to be asked for.

Financial Cents is the closest comparison and costs roughly three times as much per seat on its higher plan, buying a much larger workflow template library, a QuickBooks Online client sync and a longer track record with US firms. TaxDome costs more again and brings tax software integrations and a far bigger practitioner community, which matters when a firm needs an answer at 11pm in March. Basil's argument against both is unlimited KBA signing and a per-seat price that lets a growing firm add an admin without a budget conversation.

One-to-watch is correct and stands. The parent company is fifteen years old and profitable enough to have run Qbox that long, which is more foundation than most tools at this price have, but Basil itself is young in the accounting market, thin on integrations and silent on compliance documentation. It deserves a trial from a small firm currently paying per signature. It does not yet deserve a firm's whole busy season without a security conversation first.

## What it costs and what it connects to

Basil starts at $15 per user/month (Simple $15 per team member with 25 GB storage; Advanced $45 per team member with 50 GB, workflow automation, time tracking and billing; month to month, no contract). Pricing is per user, per month. A free trial is available: 15 days, no card.

We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Basil from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

Basil connects to QuickBooks Online, which is the integration that decides whether a tool fits a firm's existing book of clients.

Beyond that: Gmail, Outlook, Stripe, Amazon Web Services storage and iOS and Android apps.
