The read

## What IRIS Practice Management does

This name does not describe one product, and untangling that is most of the value of reading about it. On irisglobal.com, IRIS's US-facing site, Practice Management is a hub page rather than a SKU: it presents two products beneath it, IRIS Star Practice Management for single and multi-office CPA firms, and IRIS Practice Engine for firms pursuing growth. A third packaging, IRIS Firm Management, bundles practice management with IRIS iChannel document management and is pitched at enterprise-level and growing firms. Meanwhile on iris.co.uk, the UK site, the phrase IRIS Practice Management refers to something else entirely, IRIS Elements Practice Management, a cloud module with Companies House integration, SMS and email automation, a client portal with e-signature, and Essentials, Professional and Enterprise plans. A US firm reading UK reviews of IRIS Practice Management is reading about software it cannot buy.

What the US line actually offers, as described on the hub, is client information management with CRM functions, project progress monitoring and task management, time tracking with automated billing and invoicing, revenue recognition and financial management, real-time reporting dashboards, and workflow automation with document integration. IRIS states that 54 of the top 100 US accountancy firms are clients, and the customer names on the page, Olsen Thielen CPAs and Schneider Downs, are firms of several hundred people.

The weaknesses follow from that positioning. No price, no plan names, no trial and no product tour are published on the US pages, so a firm cannot evaluate anything without a sales call. No security page is linked from the practice management hub, so SOC 2 status, hosting region and MFA policy have to be requested. Star Practice Management and Practice Engine are presented as alternatives to each other rather than as one roadmap, which is what usually happens when a group has grown by acquisition, and a buyer should ask directly which product receives current development and which is in maintenance. Nothing on the pages answers that.

For a US firm the practical comparisons are the tax vendors' own practice modules. CCH Axcess Practice and Thomson Reuters Practice CS both attach to the tax suite a large firm is already running, which is a structural advantage IRIS does not have. Onvio and XCM compete on workflow. For anything under about fifty staff, Karbon or Financial Cents will be cheaper, faster to implement and easier to evaluate, because both publish per-seat prices and run trials.

Dated is kept. The evidence for it is not aging screenshots, which are not available to inspect, but the shape of the offer: two overlapping products under one hub page with no stated succession between them, no published pricing or trial, no linked security documentation, and reference customers an order of magnitude larger than this directory's reader. For a firm of 2 to 50 people that is not a system to adopt today. A firm already running Star Practice Management should ask IRIS where its roadmap sits relative to Practice Engine before renewing.

Our rating

## Why we rate IRIS Practice Management a Dated

IRIS Practice Management is rated Dated: it is one of 18 of the 49 practice management tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.

Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
