## What Monday does

Start with what this is not. monday.com is general-purpose work management software sold to marketing teams, construction firms, IT departments and PMOs, and accounting firms who use it have repurposed it. The vendor markets use cases for agile project management, help desk, resource management, budgeting and forecasting and financial reporting, and none for accounting practices. That framing matters, because everything good and bad about monday.com in a firm follows from it.

What a firm gains is genuine. Seats are cheap: $9 for Basic, $12 for Standard and $19 for Pro per seat per month billed annually, against $19 to $89 for purpose-built practice management, with a free plan for two seats and a 14-day trial. Boards are fully custom, so a firm can model a tax season pipeline, a monthly close calendar and an internal hiring process in the same tool and view any of them as a Kanban board, a Gantt chart, a calendar or a dashboard. Automations are strong and the limits are published rather than vague: 250 automation runs a month on Standard, 25,000 on Pro. Forms and docs sit on the same boards, so client intake questionnaires feed the pipeline directly. The compliance posture is the best in this category by some distance, with SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, CSA STAR, TX-RAMP and a HIPAA business associate agreement available.

What a firm gives up is the entire domain layer. There is no client record, only a row on a board that a person decided would represent a client. There is no workflow shaped like a tax return, no engagement letter, no client portal, no e-signature and therefore no 8879 flow, and no connection to a general ledger or to Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or CCH Axcess. The template gallery contains more than 200 templates across marketing, project management, sales, design, software development and HR, and no accounting or finance category at all, so a firm builds its own from a blank board. Someone has to own that configuration permanently. When the person who designed the boards leaves, the firm inherits a structure nobody fully understands, and there is no vendor implementation team who knows what a 1120S deadline is to fix it.

Karbon and Financial Cents solve the practice management problem directly, with client records, tax workflow templates, a portal and signature flow built in, and they cost three to six times as much a seat for exactly that reason. Compared with the other general tools a firm might repurpose, ClickUp, Notion and Trello, monday.com has the strongest automation engine and the best security documentation, and Notion has the better document model. None of them close the domain gap.

Moved from dated to strong-option, and the reason for moving is worth stating plainly, because it is not a compliment about the product. Dated implies a stalled roadmap, which is factually wrong here: monday.com is actively developed and heavily certified. The real problem is fit, not staleness. Strong-option is the accurate rating under this directory's definition, a credible tool that wins on a narrow fit, meaning a firm doing project-shaped advisory or CAS work, or one that already runs on monday.com and wants to add practice workflow beside it. A compliance-heavy tax practice should buy something built for the job instead.

Our rating

## Why we rate Monday a Strong Option

Monday is rated Strong Option, alongside 15 other of the 49 practice management tools in this directory.

A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
