The read

## What Parker Tax Pro Library does

James Levey founded this in 2005 with the editorial team that had previously built Kleinrock, and the product they shipped in 2011 does one thing on purpose: federal tax research, written by editors, sold at a price a solo practitioner signs without a conversation. The subscription lists at $591 a year and is currently discounted to $441 through mid-September. What that buys is 25 volumes of explanation running to roughly 12,000 pages, about 3,000 worked examples, and 74,000 citations pointing into a primary-source layer of 97,000 court opinions back to 1924 and 144,000 IRS documents back to 1954, alongside the Code with section histories, regulations, proposed regulations and treaties. A biweekly bulletin summarises developments, and there are more than 300 client letters and practice aids to lift rather than draft.

Day to day it works like a library rather than an assistant. A preparer searches, lands on Parker's own explanation of a Code section, reads the example, and follows the citation to the ruling or the opinion when the answer needs support in a file. The editorial voice is the value. Nobody is licensing Parker for the Internal Revenue Code, which is free at Cornell, they are licensing it because someone who has read the whole of section 199A wrote 40 pages explaining it.

The limitation is stated plainly on the vendor's own pages and matters more than anything else about the product: it is federal only. No state income tax, no sales and use tax, no local coverage. A firm that files in three states needs a second subscription, and once a second subscription is in the budget the economics against a bundled federal-and-state product change completely. Two further trade-offs are worth naming. There is no AI question-answering layer of any kind, so this is search and read, which is fast for someone who already knows roughly where the answer lives and slow for a junior who does not. And the site is an aging ASP.NET application whose pages still carry .aspx extensions, with an interface that looks its age next to anything launched in the past five years.

TheTaxBook is the sharpest comparison at this price point, and the two split cleanly. TheTaxBook is a fast-answer deskbook covering federal and all 50 states with an AI assistant attached, for $429. Parker is deeper federal analysis with a real primary-source archive and no state coverage, for $591. A preparer who needs the multistate chart wants the first; one who needs to understand a federal position well enough to defend it wants the second. Against Checkpoint or CCH AnswerConnect, Parker gives up state, international and audit content and asks for a fraction of the money.

Strong-option is confirmed, and it is a genuine one rather than a courtesy. The publisher is current, with articles dated through August 2026 and continuous updates, the pricing is published and modest, and the editorial depth is real. The federal-only scope is what keeps it from being a first recommendation for a firm of any breadth.
