The read

## What SafeSend does

Firms consistently underestimate the work that sits between a finished return and a signed 8879, and that gap is what SafeSend was built to close. The finished PDF comes out of the tax software; SafeSend splits it into the client copy, the government copy and the signature documents, attaches the filing instructions, generates estimated payment vouchers with their due dates, routes the whole package to the taxpayer, collects the signature, and tells the firm where every return stands. The vendor puts assembly and delivery at three to four minutes per return against roughly fifteen minutes by hand. Extensions can be batched. K-1s go out electronically to partners and shareholders instead of being printed and mailed, which is the part most firms have no other answer for.

The e-signature detail is where this matters legally rather than cosmetically. Signing Form 8879 remotely requires identity proofing, and SafeSend runs knowledge-based authentication for that, reporting a 97 percent pass rate. The 3 percent is the question every firm should ask, and the answer here is in-office signing: when KBA fails, the taxpayer signs in person or on paper and the firm keeps the return moving inside the same workflow rather than dropping to email. Signing can run in parallel or in sequence, conditional rules can gate a signer, and batches can be sent by mail merge. Notably, the pricing page states that KBA is not billed per use, which is a real cost difference against tools that meter it.

Nothing about this is native to a tax program, and that is the most common misunderstanding. UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake and CCH Axcess all produce a return and an 8879; none of them assembles the client package, distributes K-1s, chases signatures with automated reminders or reports on where 800 returns are sitting on 1 April. SafeSend sits on top of the tax software rather than replacing any part of it, integrating with UltraTax CS and GoSystem Tax RS on the Thomson Reuters side and with Lacerte and CCH Axcess elsewhere.

The trade-offs are pricing and ownership. No number is published anywhere. Tiers exist and the vendor is specific about what it does not charge for, but a firm cannot size the spend without a sales conversation, and the effective unit is the return, so a 1,500-return practice pays materially more than a 200-return one for the same product. Thomson Reuters acquired the company in 2025, and while SafeSend has kept its own brand and roadmap so far, a firm on Drake or ProSeries should ask directly how long the non-Thomson integrations stay first-class. The suite has also grown wide enough that firms buy modules they do not use, and its own integrations page was returning a server error when checked.

Against TaxCaddy, which is now Thomson Reuters property too, SafeSend is the stronger delivery engine and TaxCaddy the stronger client-side document gathering experience. Against Soraban the comparison is closer and more interesting: Soraban covers intake, workpapers and write-back as well as delivery, where SafeSend is deliberately narrower and deeper.

The inherited tier was dated. The evidence contradicts it. Ten million returns delivered, roughly 70 percent of the Top 500 firms as customers, and current releases including Next Gen Gather AI and Letter Builder describe an actively developed category standard. Top pick.

## What it costs and what it connects to

Thomson Reuters does not publish a price for SafeSend; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.

We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for SafeSend from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

SafeSend does not integrate directly with a general ledger.

On the tax side it works with UltraTax CS, GoSystem Tax RS, Intuit Lacerte and CCH Axcess, which covers most of what US firms run.

Beyond that: API connections to practice management, CRM and accounting systems.
