The read
What StanfordTax does
The organizer is the piece StanfordTax started from, and it still shapes the product. A firm uploads a prior-year backup from ProSystem fx, Axcess, UltraTax, Lacerte, ProSeries, ProConnect or Drake, and the tool builds a personalised questionnaire with spouse, dependents and basic details already filled in and prior-year numbers shown next to the Schedule C, E and F questions. The client opens it from a link with no username or password, answers, and drops documents in. Everything that arrives is split out of multi-page scans, renamed, bookmarked and sorted into return order, and a checklist ticks itself off as items land. Reviewers then work the binder with tick marks, cross-references and calculator tapes.
Pricing is the most unusual thing about it, and worth checking against the alternatives with a calculator. StanfordTax charges $18 per return on the Premium plan, counted only when a document is uploaded to a return, with five free credits at sign-up, unused credits rolling into the next year and no implementation or onboarding fee. Enterprise is quoted at $25 and up per return for custom integrations. At 200 returns that is $3,600 a year, which almost nothing else in this category matches. At 1,500 returns it is $27,000, and a seat-priced or flat-fee competitor starts to look better, so the per-return unit cuts both ways.
The limit to understand before buying is where the automation stops. StanfordTax produces a bookmarked PDF workpaper. It does not push extracted W-2 and 1099 figures into the tax program, so a preparer still keys the return. Nothing on the site describes e-signature either, which means Form 8879 with knowledge-based authentication still has to come from the tax software or a delivery tool. The security page is candid about infrastructure, naming Cloudflare, Fly.io and Neon as hosts, Aikido for vulnerability management, and multi-factor authentication or Google SSO for internal access, but it never states a SOC 2 report type even though an AICPA SOC badge sits in the site footer. Any firm that needs a report should ask for it by name before signing.
Compared with SurePrep 1040SCAN, this is the cheaper and lighter half of the same job: 1040SCAN populates the return, StanfordTax organises the paper around it. Against Truss the gap is scope, since Truss carries the same intake and binder plus e-signature, delivery, payment and a prep marketplace. Against SafeSend the comparison barely holds, because SafeSend owns delivery and this owns intake.
Top-pick stands. Published per-return pricing at this level is rare, the Karbon partnership is real and documented, the product won a 2024 CPA Practice Advisor Innovation Award, and a firm can test it on five returns without talking to anyone. The caveat is that it solves intake and organisation only, and a firm expecting data entry to disappear will be disappointed.

What it costs and what it connects to
StanfordTax starts at $18 per return (credits bought in advance, unused credits roll over to the next year; Enterprise quoted at $25+ per return). Pricing is per return. A free trial is available: 5 free return credits on sign-up, no card.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for StanfordTax from public sources, multi-factor authentication is available. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
StanfordTax does not integrate directly with a general ledger.
On the tax side it works with CCH ProSystem fx, CCH Axcess, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, ProSeries, ProConnect and Drake Tax, which covers most of what US firms run.
Beyond that: Karbon.
