The read

What TaxAct Professional does

Two thousand and ninety-five dollars buys unlimited 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041 and 990 returns with all fifty states on a single seat, and $2,495 buys the same thing for a multi-user office. That is the cheapest published route to unlimited entity filing among the products in this category, and it is the reason TaxAct Professional keeps a foothold in small firms that have priced the alternatives. Below the Complete Bundle sit narrower options: the 1040 Bundle at $1,175 single user for unlimited individual returns, a Business Forty Bundle at $1,095 covering forty mixed returns, and a 1040 Twenty Bundle at $725. Pay-per-return is $169.99 or $279.99 for the licence depending on whether entity work is included, then $29.99 a 1040 and $49.99 an entity return, with states charged at $44 or $49 each and 47 of them available.

The working software is a Windows program with a client manager, prior-year carryforward on every plan, client organizers and result letters, and Document Manager with cloud data storage on the multi-user and tiered plans. E-signature covers federal Form 8879 and its state equivalents but explicitly excludes Forms 990 and 1041, which matters for a firm with nonprofit or fiduciary clients. Refund transfers run through Republic Bank & Trust and Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. TaxAct's own pricing page says the client portal shipping in June 2026 is powered by Drake Software, which is a useful piece of information about where this product's engineering now comes from.

The pricing has sharp edges worth reading before signing. Unused bundle returns do not roll over from year to year, so a firm that buys forty and files thirty has thrown money away rather than banked it. Overage on the tiered bundles is $29.99 individual and $49.99 business, which erodes the headline saving fast. States are bundled only on the bundles: a pay-per-return firm pays $44 or $49 per state module, so a three-state practice at low volume ends up closer to the bundle price than the entry number suggests. TaxAct also publishes nothing about scan-and-populate, so document extraction is a separate purchase from GruntWorx or SurePrep, and nothing about what a conversion from a competitor preserves.

Against Drake Tax the comparison is direct and the gap is real: Drake's $3,295 unlimited plan and TaxAct's $2,095 cover broadly the same ground, with Drake having the deeper reputation for support and TaxAct the lower number. Against ProSeries, TaxAct includes entity returns in the unlimited price where Intuit charges for them on the $2,605 plan. Against TaxSlayer Pro at $1,695 for its Premium desktop package, TaxAct costs more and gives more state and portal infrastructure.

Dated was the inherited tier and it is wrong. TaxAct publishes a complete, current price list across six plan shapes, includes all fifty states in every bundle, and is shipping a new client portal this year. The limits are a thin advisory story, no first-party document automation, and unpublished conversion detail. Strong-option, on price.
