The read

What TallyFor does

Most of this category starts with a client sending documents. Tallyfor starts with the books. It pulls a trial balance out of QuickBooks Online, Xero or a spreadsheet, applies classifications and a mapping that persists from year to year, lets a preparer post adjusting journal entries, and produces a tax-ready file that exports into CCH Axcess, Drake, Lacerte, ProConnect or UltraTax. Around that sit WorkLESS Papers, which attaches each source document to the account line it supports so the workpaper defends the number rather than sitting in a folder near it, and TaxCalc, a line-by-line 1040 engine that computes AMT, QBI, NIIT, self-employment tax, credits and capital gains for planning and quarterly estimates.

Pricing is published in full and structured around the binder rather than the seat. The entry plan is $875 a year including 25 binders, and additional volume runs $35 each between 25 and 99 binders, $31.50 to 299, $28 to 499, $24.50 to 749, $21 to 999, and $17.50 at 1,000 or more. Binders come in packs of five, there is no per-seat licence, no multi-year contract and no auto-renewal, and a firm can start a trial and set up a client without paying. For a practice with a lot of part-time reviewers that unit is a genuine saving, and the security page states SOC 2 compliance with encryption, MFA and SSO, though it does not name the report type.

The honest caveat is that this is not document collection and does not pretend to be. There is no client portal, no organizer, no e-signature, and therefore no Form 8879 with knowledge-based authentication and no delivery step. Nothing writes W-2 or 1099 data into a return from a scan, because the input is a general ledger, not a stack of client PDFs. Individual return preparation is described as being in private beta, so the finished-return side of the product is not yet proven for 1040s. And nothing is published about who runs the company, when it was founded, where it is based or how it is funded, which is a real gap when a firm is deciding whether to depend on it through a busy season.

Compared with SPbinder, both hold workpapers, but SPbinder is built around 1040 source documents and Tallyfor around a trial balance, so a firm doing partnership and S-corp work gets more from Tallyfor and a 1040 shop gets more from SPbinder. Truss and StanfordTax solve the other end entirely and would sit alongside this rather than instead of it. K1x overlaps only on K-1 handling.

The tier moves from top-pick to strong-option, and the reason is scope rather than quality. This category is defined as the path from a client sending documents to a finished return going out, and Tallyfor covers one segment of that path very well while leaving intake, signing and delivery to something else. Strong-option is what the tier definition calls a tool that wins on a specific niche and workflow, which is exactly what the published pricing, the year-over-year mappings and the ledger-to-tax export add up to.

What it costs and what it connects to

TallyFor starts at $875 per year, includes 25 binders (volume tiers from $35 per binder at 25-99 down to $17.50 at 1,000 or more; binders sold in packs of 5; no per-seat licence, no multi-year contract, no auto-renewal). Pricing is per binder, per year. A free trial is available: yes, no card required.

TallyFor holds a SOC 2 report, multi-factor authentication is available, SAML single sign-on is supported.

TallyFor connects to QuickBooks Online and Xero. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.

On the tax side it works with CCH Axcess, Drake, Lacerte, ProConnect and UltraTax CS, which covers most of what US firms run.
