The read
What Xbert does
Rather than automating the close itself, XBert watches the ledger between closes. It syncs connected files several times a day and runs a library of over 150 prebuilt checks, called XBerts, that surface as alerts on the same workflow boards the practice already uses for jobs and tasks. The checks span four areas: tax and registration validation, bookkeeping accuracy such as duplicate entries, inconsistent coding and bills missing attachments, fraud signals including supplier bank account changes and employee bank accounts matching a supplier record, and payroll issues such as missing employee tax details. Firms can also write their own alerts as natural-language prompts and pull from a shared community library. On top of that sits a workflow layer with recurring schedules, 26-plus practice analytics reports, and a white-labelled client portal.
This fits a bookkeeping practice that cleans up files rather than one that prepares returns. The value is in catching an error in week two instead of finding it during review, and the analytics reports give a practice manager a view of which clients are generating the most rework. Pricing is unusually transparent for the category and unusually structured: $29 per user per month billed annually, plus a data plan per client that scales from $7 for under 100 monthly transactions to $99 above 4,000. A five-person firm with thirty mid-size clients can price that out in a spreadsheet in five minutes, which not many vendors in this category allow.
The caveat that matters most for a US reader is jurisdiction. XBert is an Australian company, XBert Pty Ltd, and the check library was built around Australian compliance: BAS lodgements, GST, ABN validation, superannuation, award rates. The vendor states plainly that the number of checks ranges from 40 to 95 depending on region across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, USA, Canada and South Africa, so a US firm is not getting the headline 150. Neither the QuickBooks integration page nor the data-quality page says which checks a US file receives, and nothing addresses US sales tax or 1099 exposure. Prices are quoted in USD, but AUD and NZD lead the table. There is also no published SOC 2 report or trust page, only a reference to bank-grade encryption.
Xenett is the closer competitor for a US practice, at $7.50 per client per month with checks written for QBO and Xero in a US context and 1099 management built in. Truewind goes deeper on reconciliation and Sage Intacct but costs more and hides its price.
Strong-option is kept. The product is mature, actively developed, and priced publicly, and the exception-based monitoring model is genuinely different from a close checklist. It sits below a top pick because a US firm should assume it is buying the smaller regional check set and should ask for the US list before signing.

What it costs and what it connects to
Xbert starts at $29 per user/month (billed annually, plus $7 to $99 per client per month by monthly transaction volume). Pricing is per user per month plus a per client data plan. A free trial is available: free trial, no card required.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Xbert from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
Xbert connects to Xero, QuickBooks Online, MYOB and FreeAgent. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.
Beyond that: Employment Hero and MCP for Claude and ChatGPT.
Our rating
Why we rate Xbert a Strong Option
Xbert is rated Strong Option, alongside 5 other of the 11 month-end close automation tools in this directory.
A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
