The read
What QuickBooks Desktop does
Intuit has finished dismantling the Desktop line for everything except Enterprise, and the clearest evidence is the website itself. As of September 2026, quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/ is titled around levelling up from QuickBooks Desktop and offers exactly three products: QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, QuickBooks Online Advanced, and Intuit Enterprise Suite. The Pro and Premier URLs resolve to that same page. Neither Pro Plus nor Premier Plus nor QuickBooks for Mac is named, described or priced anywhere on it. Intuit also now funds the exit, stating that it "manages migration from start to finish for Quickbooks Desktop customers, up to a $9,000 value." A firm should read that as a product line in wind-down, not a product line being quietly maintained.
What remains in the field is a large installed base of company files. The reasons those files still exist are real. Desktop is faster for heads-down data entry, the Accountant's Copy gives a clean way to lock a period and hand back adjusting entries, job costing and inventory in Premier and Enterprise go deeper than QuickBooks Online, and firms with 15 years of history in a file are rightly wary of what a conversion does to prior-year comparatives and custom reports. Multi-user access runs over a local network unless the client pays separately for hosting.
The costs of staying are now the dominant fact. Intuit's annual service discontinuation cycle turns off payroll, payments, bank feeds and support for older version-years, and every user must run the same version-year, so upgrades are all-or-nothing for a client's whole team. Files live on someone's machine, which makes remote staff and backups a firm problem. Add-ons and app integrations have steadily moved to the online product, and third-party developers follow Intuit. There is nothing resembling a firm console: a practice supporting 40 Desktop clients is opening 40 files, often through 40 hosting sessions. The dated service discontinuation policy article Intuit publishes was not retrievable at the URLs tried for this profile, so specific version cut-off dates are not stated here. Check it directly before advising a client on timing.
The comparison that matters is not against another vendor. It is Desktop versus QuickBooks Online for the same client, and for most small businesses the online product now wins on everything except inventory depth and raw entry speed. Where the client genuinely needs Desktop mechanics, QuickBooks Enterprise is the only edition Intuit still sells and is the migration target Intuit pushes hardest, followed by Intuit Enterprise Suite for multi-entity cases. Sage 50 is the closest like-for-like desktop alternative for a client that refuses the cloud outright, and it carries the same structural problems.
Dated is the correct tier and it stays. This is the textbook case: software that still works, still has files in production, and has no future. The practical advice is unglamorous. Inventory which client files are still on Desktop, put a date on each conversion, and use Intuit's funded migration while it is on offer rather than discovering the deadline during a busy season.

What it costs and what it connects to
Intuit does not publish a price for QuickBooks Desktop; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for QuickBooks Desktop from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
QuickBooks Desktop connects to QuickBooks Online, which is the integration that decides whether a tool fits a firm's existing book of clients.
Beyond that: QuickBooks Payroll, QuickBooks Payments and Intuit Enterprise Suite.
Our rating
Why we rate QuickBooks Desktop a Dated
QuickBooks Desktop is rated Dated: it is one of 8 of the 26 general ledger & bookkeeping tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
