The read
What Count does
Price is the first thing COUNT wants a buyer to notice. Three published plans run at $15, $29 and $99 a month per workspace on a 30-day trial, against QuickBooks Online tiers several times higher, and the top plan carries unlimited bank connections, unlimited transactions and a dedicated account manager. Underneath that sits a genuine double-entry ledger with cash and accrual books, full audit logs, bill tracking with approvals, invoicing that accepts card and ACH, receipt capture through a mobile app that matches to the bank feed, and AI categorization the vendor claims reaches 95 percent accuracy before tuning. Payroll is a US-only add-on at $40 per workspace plus $6 per active person. One named practitioner says COUNT replaced QuickBooks, Slack and TaxDome for her.
The pitch to firms is where the caution starts. The accountants page describes an operating system for accounting firms combining general ledger, practice management and client collaboration, with a close wizard, task templates, a client portal and time and billing. Read further and the same page says the Practice Manager is launching soon, that the COUNT Partner Program is still being developed, and that preferential partner pricing, partner onboarding and co-marketing will be part of it. The only action available is joining a waitlist and emailing the company. So the firm console that would let a practice run a hundred client files from one login, and the wholesale discount that would make it economic, do not exist yet. Today a firm buys or has each client buy a separate workspace and gets invited into it.
There are other gaps a careful buyer should pin down before committing. No ledger, tax software or practice management integration is named anywhere, and the claim of 13,000-plus native integrations sits on the homepage without a directory behind it. The security posture takes some finding. The homepage asserts SOC 2 compliance under a security heading, while the dedicated security page, otherwise detailed about Azure hosting, read-only bank connections, PCI handling and LLM redaction, never mentions a SOC 2 report. The answer sits on a third page: a Secureframe-monitored trust centre at trust.getcount.com lists a SOC 2 Type 2 report available on request, alongside continuous control monitoring. The report itself is gated, so a firm putting client financial data on the platform should still ask for the current one and its observation window rather than rely on the badge.
Digits is the direct comparison and the instructive one. Digits publishes firm pricing at $35 per client per month for a solo practice with unlimited team seats and central billing, and ships the multi-client console today. COUNT is cheaper per workspace and promises the same combined ledger and practice management shape, but has not shipped the firm half. Against QuickBooks Online, COUNT is a fraction of the price with none of the ProAdvisor infrastructure, app ecosystem or client familiarity.
One-to-watch is the correct inherited tier and the vendor's own page confirms it. COUNT has real product, disclosed investors including Morgan Stanley, and named practitioner references. What it does not yet have is the thing an accounting firm buys a client ledger for: a console, a partner program, and a bill the firm controls. When the Practice Manager ships, this is worth reassessing.
