What Accounting CS does
Thomson Reuters built Accounting CS around the firm rather than the client, and that is still its defining trait. Write-up, trial balance, payroll, financial reporting and client accounting sit in one database, so a staff member can process a task across a whole book of clients instead of opening files one at a time. Setup templates push firm standards onto new engagements. Workspaces restrict what each preparer sees. Where a client wants to do some of the data entry, Accounting CS Client Access gives them a view into the same records the firm is working in, with no import, export or file swap in between.
The payroll module is the part that keeps many firms on it. The brochure describes automatic state and local withholding based on company and employee addresses, multi-department and multi-location employees, impounding, electronic funding of liabilities from client accounts, MICR check printing, pre-noting, child support payments, state ACH files and Affordable Care Act reporting. That is a live payroll bureau engine, not after-the-fact write-up dressed up, and very little else in this directory competes with it on that ground.
The trade-off is the buying and running experience. Thomson Reuters publishes no price at all, so a 6-person firm cannot sanity-check the spend without a sales call, and the delivery options on offer are desktop licensing, a SaaS lease, or paying separately for Virtual Office CS hosting to reach it from a browser. That is a 2010s deployment model. The interface is dense and the learning curve is real. Integration is strongest inside the CS family, meaning UltraTax CS, Practice CS, NetClient CS and FileCabinet CS, and thinner outside it, with QuickBooks import as the main bridge to the modern small-business ledger world. A firm whose clients all live in QuickBooks Online or Xero will spend its life pulling data across rather than working in it.
Accounting Power is the closest structural comparison, another write-up plus general ledger system sold only to accountants, and it is the cheaper and simpler of the two but has nothing like the CS payroll depth or suite integration. Against QuickBooks Online with a ProAdvisor console, Accounting CS wins on cross-client processing and payroll compliance and loses on price transparency, client familiarity and third-party app ecosystem.
The inherited dated tier holds up, and it is worth being precise about why. This is not an abandoned product. The brochure and a bank feeds fact sheet were both refreshed under a 2025 brand update, and Thomson Reuters is still selling it by phone. What has stalled is the shape of it: a Windows-era application reached through hosting, priced by quote, while the vendor's visible investment goes into CoCounsel and the AI tax and audit line. Firms already deep in the CS suite have good reason to stay. A firm choosing a client ledger from scratch in 2026 has better-fitting options.

What it costs and what it connects to
Thomson Reuters does not publish a price for Accounting CS; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Accounting CS from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
Accounting CS connects to QuickBooks Desktop, which is the integration that decides whether a tool fits a firm's existing book of clients.
On the tax side it works with UltraTax CS.
Beyond that: Practice CS, NetClient CS, FileCabinet CS, Workpapers CS and Virtual Office CS.
Our rating
Why we rate Accounting CS a Dated
Accounting CS is rated Dated: it is one of 8 of the 26 general ledger & bookkeeping tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
