The read

What Financial Cents does

Ask a firm of eight what it replaced when it bought Financial Cents and the answer is usually a spreadsheet, a shared inbox, a folder tree and a separate time tracker. That consolidation is the pitch, and the workflow engine is what carries it. More than 250 prebuilt templates cover monthly bookkeeping, payroll, 1040 and 1120 preparation, sales tax and construction accounting, so a new firm is not designing a checklist from a blank page. Jobs recur on a schedule, tasks assign to owners with due dates, client tasks chase the client through the portal, and the whole board rolls up into capacity and profitability reporting that shows who is over-loaded before the deadline rather than after.

Around that sit a client CRM with a native two-way QuickBooks Online sync, an encrypted client vault where SSN and TIN fields stay double-encrypted until requested, document management with e-signature, time tracking, invoicing, retainers, project billing, ACH and card collection, a proposal builder that spins up the workflow the moment a proposal is signed, and a set of AI helpers that rename files, validate uploads, draft emails and generate checklists. The company was founded in 2020, is at 70-plus staff across eight countries, and cites more than 10,000 firms.

Two things to check before buying. The plan boundaries are meaningful, not cosmetic: tax software integrations, branded portal, shared email inbox, Zapier, the open API, SmartVault, task dependencies, profitability reporting and auto follow-ups on client tasks are all on Scale at $69 per user per month annually, not on Team at $49, and monthly billing on either requires a five-user minimum. A three-person firm wanting the Drake connection is pushed to annual billing. Second, the SOC 2 attestation is Type I, a point-in-time design review, not the Type II operating-effectiveness report that Canopy and Firm360 publish. MFA is available and encouraged rather than enforced except on Enterprise, SSO is not mentioned, and hosting is split across DigitalOcean and AWS in New York and Virginia. None of that is disqualifying, but a firm serving audited clients should raise it.

Karbon is the usual alternative and is stronger on email triage and internal collaboration, at a meaningfully higher price and with a heavier setup. Canopy starts at $74 per user per month and buys a deeper document and tax integration layer plus tax resolution, which matters for firms doing IRS representation work. TaxDome bundles more into a flatter price and suits high-volume 1040 shops better. Financial Cents wins the middle: it is the cheapest of the four to get a small firm fully operational, and the template library shortens implementation from months to weeks.

Top-pick is confirmed. Current pricing with named plan boundaries, a published security page naming its hosting regions, a stated founding year and headcount, an active AI roadmap and an entry price of $19 for a solo all point the same way. The reservation is the Type I rather than Type II attestation and the Scale-tier paywall around the integrations most tax firms will want.
