The read
What OfficeTools Cloud does
AbacusNext announced OfficeTools Cloud on 17 December 2019 as a software-as-a-service practice management product for tax and accounting firms, priced at $49 per user per month with a 14-day trial. It was a separate product from OfficeTools WorkSpace, the Windows desktop application the same team had sold for two decades, and it was positioned as the successor: mobility without hosting fees, a browser instead of an installer, and a smaller feature footprint in exchange. Firms got clients, projects, phone calls, notes and time entries in one web application, a bidirectional QuickBooks Online sync, Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 for contacts and calendar, Dropbox for storage, card and ACH collection through Abacus Payment Exchange, and machine-learning tagging that filed documents automatically.
The important fact for a buyer in 2026 is that it appears no longer to be sold. The product page at officetools.com/cloud was still live in April 2023 and now returns a permanent redirect. There is no cloud page anywhere in the site's sitemap. The homepage, the pricing page and the tech specs all describe OfficeTools WorkSpace and nothing else, and CARET's own solutions list names one accounting product, "OfficeTools by CARET". Nothing on the vendor's site announces a sunset or offers a migration route, which is its own kind of answer.
So the trade-off is not really about features any more. It is that a firm on OfficeTools Cloud is running client work on a product its vendor has stopped naming in public, from a company whose news page has published nothing but CARET Legal announcements since 2023 and which sold its enterprise HotDocs business in 2024 to concentrate on midsize law firms. Support may still exist. Roadmap almost certainly does not. Anyone in that position should be planning an export rather than a renewal, and should ask CARET directly and in writing what the retention and extraction terms are.
The natural comparisons for firms leaving are the cloud products that took the market OfficeTools Cloud was aiming at. Canopy and TaxDome both cover the client record, portal, document requests and e-signature that Cloud never fully had, and both integrate with mainstream tax software. Financial Cents is the cheaper landing spot for a bookkeeping-heavy firm on QuickBooks Online. Moving sideways to OfficeTools WorkSpace is technically possible but means adopting a Windows desktop application with a SQL Server behind it, which is a strange direction to travel in.
Dated is kept, and if anything it is generous. The tier normally means a product still sold but not keeping pace. Here the evidence points to a product withdrawn from sale between 2023 and 2025 with no announcement. What could not be established from the vendor's own site is whether existing subscribers are still being supported and on what terms, which is exactly the question worth putting to CARET before another renewal date passes.

What it costs and what it connects to
CARET does not publish a price for OfficeTools Cloud; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for OfficeTools Cloud from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
OfficeTools Cloud connects to QuickBooks Online, which is the integration that decides whether a tool fits a firm's existing book of clients.
Beyond that: Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office 365, Dropbox and Abacus Payment Exchange.
Our rating
Why we rate OfficeTools Cloud a Dated
OfficeTools Cloud is rated Dated: it is one of 18 of the 49 practice management tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
