The read
What OfficeTools Workspace does
WorkSpace is the surviving half of the OfficeTools line and the only product the vendor still markets. It installs on Windows and describes itself as a single desktop application: contacts with no cap on records, a calendar with several views, projects and due dates, time entry that feeds billing directly, and document storage that tags and categorises files and keeps versions against one client record. A branded client portal handles document exchange, e-signature, invoices, appointment requests, a check-in kiosk and online timesheets, and can be embedded in a firm's own website. Card and eCheck payments run through APX PayNow at a fixed 3.0%, settling in one to two business days. A mobile app covers time tracking, project status and call logging for staff away from the office.
The firm this suits is one already on it. A five to twenty person tax practice on a Windows network, preparing returns in Lacerte and doing write-up in QuickBooks Desktop, gets a genuinely integrated record: the phone call, the note, the time entry, the project and the invoice all attach to the same client. What the vendor names as integrations is short and specific, and it does not include Drake, UltraTax, ProSeries or ProConnect. Mac firms, remote-first firms and anyone who wants API access to their own data should look elsewhere.
The trade-off starts with price, which is not published at all. The pricing page lists what the product includes and then gives a phone number, so comparing it against a $45 or $69 per seat cloud product means booking a sales call first. Deployment is the deeper issue: the tech specs link redirects to an AbacusNext support article that no longer serves the public, so a prospective buyer cannot check the Windows and server requirements before talking to sales. And CARET's own news page tells a story. Every item on it from 2023 through November 2025 concerns CARET Legal. There is no OfficeTools announcement of any kind, the About link in the OfficeTools navigation points at getcaret.com, and the sibling product OfficeTools Cloud has disappeared from the site without a sunset notice.
Against the current market this is a hard sell. Canopy and TaxDome cover the same client record, portal, document request and e-signature ground in a browser, publish their prices, and integrate with mainstream tax software. Financial Cents is cheaper for a bookkeeping-led firm on QuickBooks Online. The closest like-for-like comparison is Practice CS, also a Windows program, but that one at least sits inside an actively sold suite with its own tax software.
Dated is kept and the evidence is unambiguous. The product works, support exists, and a firm running it is not in trouble tomorrow. What could not be established is any current investment: no public roadmap, no changelog, no press item, no published price. That is enough to say a firm buying practice management in 2026 should not start here, and a firm already on it should be asking CARET in writing about the roadmap before the next renewal.

What it costs and what it connects to
CARET does not publish a price for OfficeTools Workspace; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for OfficeTools Workspace from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
OfficeTools Workspace connects to QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.
On the tax side it works with Lacerte.
Beyond that: Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Exchange, APX PayNow and CARET Pay.
Our rating
Why we rate OfficeTools Workspace a Dated
OfficeTools Workspace is rated Dated: it is one of 18 of the 49 practice management tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
