What Elephant CPA does
Built by CPAs for CPAs, according to its own description, Elephant offers a small and coherent set of practice management pieces: task management, time tracking, a client record, secure document storage with managed client requests, in-app messaging, e-signature, and billing with electronic payment processing. One price covers all of it. The site advertises $49.95 per user per month month to month or $45.00 billed annually, with client accounts free and no per-feature upcharges, and a 30-day trial that does not ask for a card. For a four-person firm that is roughly $2,160 a year for a working portal, document store and time and billing system, which is competitive on paper.
The problem is that the evidence points to a product that stopped moving. The marketing site returns a last-modified header of 19 January 2023 and the application login at app.elephantcpa.com returns 30 January 2023. The footer copyright reads 2023. The site is built on Gatsby 4.10.3, a 2022 release. Social preview metadata still points at a Firebase staging domain, landingelephant.web.app, with a broken image URL, which is the kind of thing a maintained marketing site fixes. There is no blog, no changelog, no press page and no customer stories.
Functionally the gaps follow from that. No integrations are published at all: no QuickBooks Online, no Xero, no Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or ProSeries, no Zapier. That means client data, ledger data and return status are all rekeyed, and a firm running Elephant is running it as an island. There is no security page, no SOC 2 statement, no encryption disclosure and no data residency information, so there is nothing to hand a client who asks how their SSN is protected. The e-signature is not described as supporting knowledge-based authentication, so Form 8879 signing is not covered. There is no workflow template library and no capacity or profitability reporting.
Financial Cents sits at $19 per user per month for a solo and $49 for a team, undercutting Elephant while carrying 250-plus workflow templates, a QuickBooks Online sync and tax software connections. Firm360 is $49 to $99 per user per month with UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake and ProConnect integrations and a published SOC 2 Type II report. Both are the same order of price with several years of visible development behind them, which makes the case for Elephant hard to construct for a firm choosing today.
Dated is confirmed, and the evidence is unusually direct. This is not a judgement about the interface or the feature list, which are fine as far as they go. It is that two HTTP last-modified timestamps, a 2023 copyright, a broken staging-domain image reference and an empty integration list all say the same thing: nobody has shipped here in a long time. A firm already using Elephant and happy with it is not in trouble, but it should have an export plan and should not expect new capability. No firm should be adopting it now, and no security posture could be confirmed either way.

Our rating
Why we rate Elephant CPA a Dated
Elephant CPA is rated Dated: it is one of 18 of the 49 practice management tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
