The read
What Uku does
Estonian in origin and sold in twelve languages across more than 25 countries, Uku covers the full span a practice management system is expected to cover: recurring work and deadlines, client records, a branded portal, documents and e-signature, time tracking, and billing that can be fixed, hourly or tied to a service. The daily rhythm is a task list generated from each client's service agreements, with automation moving work between stages and email pulled in against the task so correspondence sits with the job. The billing side is the part that distinguishes it from the cheaper workflow trackers. Uku carries client budgets, tracks time against them, and reports profitability by client and service rather than only telling a firm what is overdue.
It suits a bookkeeping-led or advisory practice of roughly three to 25 staff that sells recurring monthly work and wants a single subscription instead of a workflow tool plus a portal plus a billing add-on. Pricing is published and modest by the standards of this category, at $19 a month for a solo user with up to 20 clients and $38 per member annually on Team, which puts a five-person firm around $190 a month before add-ons.
The gap for an American buyer is specific and hard to work around. Uku has no US tax software integrations. Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte, ProConnect and CCH Axcess do not appear anywhere in its integration list, and the business registry connectors it does offer are Companies House, the Estonian e-Business Register and the Danish Business Authority. A firm whose year is built around 1040 and 1120S filings gets no return status, no e-file acknowledgement and no 8879 routing tied to the tax package it already runs. Security documentation is also thinner than a US firm holding client tax data may want: Uku states an AICPA SOC 2 Type I audit, which is a point-in-time attestation rather than the Type 2 report most peers now publish, and the site does not state where data is hosted.
Against Financial Cents, which sits at a similar price and is built around the US compliance calendar with a long list of tax software integrations, Uku loses on tax fit and wins on billing and profitability reporting. Against Karbon it is considerably cheaper and lighter, with less depth in email triage and team collaboration. Jetpack Workflow is the closer match on simplicity, and Uku offers more in return for a similar spend.
The inherited strong-option tier holds. The product is actively developed, with an MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT and an AI agent layer shipped alongside the core, and the vendor publishes prices, an integration catalogue and a public API rather than hiding behind a demo request. It is not a top pick for this directory because the target reader is a US firm, and Uku's centre of gravity is European. Where a practice is bookkeeping and CAS rather than tax, that matters much less, and Uku is a genuine option at a fair price.

Our rating
Why we rate Uku a Strong Option
Uku is rated Strong Option, alongside 15 other of the 49 practice management tools in this directory.
A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
