The read
What Amalgam does
The workbook is the interface here, and it can be either Excel or Google Sheets. A staff member authenticates QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, NetSuite, Xero, Dynamics 365 or Acumatica with the login they already hold, pulls a report or a transaction list into the sheet, does the work in the sheet, and pushes the result back as journal entries, invoices or updated vendor records. Around thirty other sources sit next to the ledger, including Shopify, Stripe, Ramp, Brex, Gusto, Salesforce, Snowflake and BigQuery, so a revenue schedule can be assembled from the sales system and posted as a multi-line entry with no CSV in the middle.
One architectural decision separates Amalgam from most write-back tools. It keeps no database of its own, connects directly to the accounts the user already has, and holds financial figures in memory rather than storing them. The vendor's stated consequence is that the audit trail traces back to the username making the edits. That is the question a reviewer asks about anything that posts into a live client file: whether the QuickBooks audit log names a person or a generic integration. Amalgam answers it directly, which matters more to a firm than any feature on the marketing page.
The trade-off is price shape. Team pricing is $199 per user per month with no per-client cap, which is generous if two people do all the reporting for forty clients and expensive if ten staff each need occasional access. There is no accountant plan priced by number of client files, so a growing firm scales this cost by headcount rather than by book. Refresh scheduling is the other gap: nothing on the public site documents whether syncs can be set to run hourly or overnight, so the workflow reads as pull-when-you-need-it rather than a report that is already current on Monday morning. The company is also young, spun out of an accounting firm called Calculate in 2023, and its about page names the founders only by first name. The one hard control fact is a SOC 2 Type 2 report completed in March 2025.
G-Accon is the closer comparison on economics and the weaker one on reach: it costs $150 a month for twenty-five client companies, but it is Google Sheets only and covers Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and FreshBooks rather than NetSuite or QuickBooks Desktop. LiveFlow covers both spreadsheets too and has better consolidation, but it now quotes rather than publishes prices. Against Booker, which only writes into QuickBooks Online from Google Sheets at $99 per client file, Amalgam does the same job across more ledgers and both spreadsheets for a per-seat fee.
Strong-option is the right place. The audit attribution, the Excel and Sheets parity and the QuickBooks Desktop and NetSuite connectors are real advantages that the pure Google Sheets tools do not have. What holds it back from a first recommendation is the seat-based price at firm scale, the undocumented refresh scheduling, and a track record that only starts in 2023.

A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
