The read
What RC Reports does
Nothing else in this category does what RCReports does, because it answers one question: what salary should an S corp owner-employee take, and can that number survive an exam. A preparer answers a guided questionnaire and the software produces a branded report using one of four routes. Wage benchmarking is the fast screen that flags which clients need a deeper look. The cost approach breaks the owner's time across the several jobs they actually do and is aimed at small businesses. The market approach compares the owner against industry peers and suits larger companies. The income approach tests whether an investor would be satisfied with what is left, and is the one that shows up in litigation work. Reports clone from the prior year against refreshed wage data, stay editable for 30 days, and can be held back from the client while the preparer reviews them.
The firms that need this are the ones carrying a real S corp book. If officer compensation on a dozen 1120-S returns is currently a number someone picked, the exposure is not theoretical, and a documented file with a stated methodology is what the fee buys. Pricing is published in full, which is rare here: Premium is 1,500 dollars a year for 10 clients and one user, with extra clients at 149 each; Professional is 4,000 dollars a year for 50 clients and three users, extra clients at 89, and it adds the Entity Selection Planner, Wage Lookup, client upload, batch send and the CYA Log. There is an entry tier at 499 dollars for a single report, an enterprise rate of 55 dollars per client per year above 500 clients, and a one-off 499 dollar report sold direct to business owners.
The trade-off is scope. RCReports does not project a return. It will not tell anyone what the qualified business income deduction does at the new salary, what happens to net investment income tax, or what the state result is. It produces a defensible number and a file, and someone else moves that number into payroll and into the return by hand. That matters because the vendor publishes no integrations at all: the partners page describes categories of partnership it would like to build, including payroll and business advisory platforms, but names no live connection. There is also no free trial, and no SOC 2. The cybersecurity policy, effective January 2024, describes AWS key management, encryption in transit and at rest, VPC controls, CloudTrail auditing and mandatory multi-factor authentication for the vendor's own IAM users, but claims no third-party attestation and does not describe MFA or SSO for firm logins.
TaxPlanIQ produces a reasonable compensation figure inside its entity comparison, and Corvee treats S corp salary as one strategy among many. Neither produces a standalone document that names the approach used, shows the wage data behind it, and comes with a court case library and audit support attached. If the point is defending a position rather than selling a plan, the narrow tool wins.
Top-pick holds. The company has been at this since 2012 from Colorado, publishes its full price list, publishes sample reports, explains its methodology rather than asserting it, and keeps the blog current on reasonable compensation case law. It is not a tax planning platform and should not be bought as one, but within its job it is the reference implementation.
