The read
What TaxPlanIQ does
The workflow starts with a 1040. TaxPlanIQ takes the return as an upload, redacts the sensitive fields automatically, and will batch up to a hundred at a time, which is how firms screen an entire client list for planning opportunities in one pass rather than one meeting at a time. An assistant called jAIne reads what it finds against a library of more than 130 strategies and ranks them by compliance risk, urgency and dollar benefit, then explains each one in language a client can follow. The ROI Method of Value Pricing turns the identified savings into a suggested fee and a proposal document, and the plan comes out white-labelled with the firm's branding. A separate Projections module handles quarterly estimates and safe harbor, Roth conversions, IRMAA, Social Security taxability, and an entity comparison that prices an S election against BLS-based reasonable compensation, across all 50 states.
Firms in the middle of the advisory pivot are the buyer, and the training is a real part of what they are paying for: 45 days of guided implementation across seven sessions, weekly group training, and up to 36 CPE credits a year on the top plan. The vendor cites more than 1,200 firms. What TaxPlanIQ sells better than anyone else in this category is the conversation, not the arithmetic. If the obstacle in a practice is that nobody knows how to quote for a plan, this closes that gap.
Three things should give a buyer pause. The first is where the real calculation sits: Projections, scenario modelling and entity comparison are Growth plan features, and Growth is 997 dollars a month on a 12-month commitment, roughly 10,200 a year at the stated 15 percent annual discount. Basic at 397 caps at twelve plans a year with one user, which is a strategy-scoring subscription rather than a planning engine. The second is import. Returns arrive as PDF uploads, and nothing published describes a direct connection to Lacerte, ProConnect, UltraTax or Drake, so the OCR pass is the only route in. The third is security. The vendor's own page states that it does not follow any third-party security standard such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. It describes a key-encryption-key and data-encryption-key scheme with files held encrypted for up to seven days, AWS hosting in Virginia, least-privilege access and pre-release scanning, but names no attestation and does not mention MFA or SSO. For a product whose core input is a complete 1040, that is a conversation a firm should have internally before signing.
Corvee is the head-on competitor on library size and price band, and cross-shopping the two is close to mandatory. Holistiplan reads a 1040 PDF and produces a planning report for a fraction of the money, though with far less on packaging and pricing. And any firm already on Lacerte or ProConnect should note Intuit's own licensing terms, which state that a Fast Path or User Access license is what is required to build Intuit Tax Advisor plans, meaning a planning tool is already sitting on the license they pay for.
The tier moved from top-pick to strong-option. Not because the product is weak, but because the axes that matter here cut against it: no import from any preparer, projections gated behind the most expensive plan, and an explicit statement that no third-party security standard is followed. It remains the strongest packaging and value-pricing layer available to a small firm, and it wins clearly on that fit. It is not where a firm should start if what it needs first is a defensible multi-state projection.
