The read

What TaxWise does

Every TaxWise Online package now ships with TaxWise Desktop at no extra charge and with unlimited users, and the footnote under that offer is the most revealing line on the page: returns e-filed in TaxWise Online stay in TaxWise Online, returns e-filed in TaxWise Desktop stay in TaxWise Desktop, and the two do not share access to returns. A firm that takes the free desktop copy is not getting a second way into the same data, it is getting a second, separate program. That is worth understanding before the bundle reads as a bargain.

The pricing is capped by return count rather than sold as unlimited. The Online 100 package is $1,849 for 100 individual returns, Online 400 is $3,899 for 400 returns in any mix of individual and business, and UltraPro is $4,249 for 2,500 returns with $2 for each one after that. A Limited package sits underneath at a $429 annual licence with $39 per individual return and $61 per business return. All of them carry a one-time $83 processing fee, all include federal and state individual and business filing across 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041, 706, 709 and 990, and all include prior-year e-filing. eSignature is charged at $5 per envelope regardless of how many documents the envelope holds.

Wolters Kluwer is clearly still building here, which cuts against writing the product off. TaxWise Online has gained automated document extraction, a simplified taxpayer interview, referral links and 1065 and 1120S preparation in the browser, and TheTaxBook research is embedded in the product. Over sixty forms and schedules are available in Spanish with bilingual support, and the product can print in the client's preferred language, which is a real differentiator for offices serving Spanish-speaking taxpayers. The buyer this is aimed at is the electronic return originator running refund transfers, not a general practice.

The problem is value at both ends of the volume curve. At 300 returns a firm needs the $3,899 package, against $1,695 for TaxSlayer Pro's unlimited Premium package or $3,295 for unlimited everything in Drake Tax. At 1,500 returns UltraPro at $4,249 becomes reasonable, but by then the firm is a high-volume shop with better options. More awkwardly, UltimateTax states on its own pricing page that it is a TaxWise partner offering TaxWise as its own brand, and it sells the same engine with unlimited 1040 and corporate returns for $1,188. A buyer choosing TaxWise directly should ask what the extra thousands are buying.

Dated stays as the tier, on the strength of the pricing model rather than the roadmap. The engine is current and actively developed, and the Spanish-language coverage is genuinely better than the field. But return-capped packages, an online and desktop pair that cannot see each other's returns, and a reseller offering the same software for a fraction of the price all point the same way for a firm choosing today.

Pricing, security, integrations

What it costs and what it connects to

TaxWise starts at $429 per year (Limited package $429 annual licence plus $39 per individual and $61 per business return; Online 100 $1,849 for 100 individual returns; Online 400 $3,899 for 400 returns in any mix; Online UltraPro $4,249 for 2,500 returns then $2 each; a one-time $83 processing fee applies; all packages have unlimited users and include TaxWise Desktop; eSignature envelopes are $5 each). Pricing is annual package with a capped number of returns, or an annual licence plus per-return fees.

We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for TaxWise from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

TaxWise does not integrate directly with a general ledger.

Beyond that: TheTaxBook, TaxWise Mobile, refund transfer bank products and eSignature.

Our rating

Why we rate TaxWise a Dated

TaxWise is rated Dated: it is one of 4 of the 18 tax preparation tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.

Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
