The read
What Patriot Accounting does
Patriot built its business on small-business payroll, and the accounting product grew out of that. It shows in the shape of the thing: two plans, Basic at $20 a month and Premium at $30, unlimited users on both, a 30-day free trial, bank imports through Plaid, card payments through Stripe, unlimited invoices and vendors, reconciliation and a patented dual-ledger design that lets the same file report on either cash or accrual basis. Premium adds estimates, recurring invoices, payment reminders, receipt and document management, user permissions and subaccounts. Everything is US-only, and Patriot says so plainly: a US address is required.
The partner program is the part worth a firm's attention, and it is unusually concrete for this price tier. Joining is free and does not require being a paying customer. An umbrella login puts every client account behind one set of credentials with instant switching. Discounts scale by client count, from 5 percent at one to five clients through 10 percent at six to twenty, 15 percent at twenty-one to fifty, 20 percent at fifty-one to ninety-nine, and 30 percent at 100 or more. Patriot bills the firm at the reduced rate so the firm can invoice clients at its own fees, and firms with six or more active clients get Patriot's software free for their own books. That is the wholesale arrangement most of this category talks about and few actually publish.
The ceiling is low, and a firm should be honest with itself about which clients fit. There is no inventory, no project or job costing, no class tracking, no multicurrency, no multi-entity consolidation, and no app marketplace to fill the gaps. Integrations are essentially Plaid, Stripe and Patriot's own payroll. Reporting is basic. A client with any operational complexity outgrows this quickly and the migration path out is a data export, not a supported conversion. The product also earns its keep mostly as a companion to Patriot Payroll, so a firm that runs payroll elsewhere loses a chunk of the value.
Wave is the obvious comparison at the bottom of the market and is cheaper still, but Wave has no partner discount structure of this kind and monetizes through payments. Zoho Books offers more product for a similar spend and has an accountant edition, though its US payroll story is thinner. Against QuickBooks Online, Patriot costs roughly half of Simple Start's $38 list and gives up the ecosystem, which for a micro client with a checking account and twenty transactions a month is often the right trade.
The tier moved up from dated. The evidence does not describe a stalled product: pricing pages are current and promoted, a 30-day trial is live, the partner program publishes a full five-tier discount ladder with consolidated firm billing, and onboarding includes a migration service and a file importer. It is strong-option rather than top-pick because the functional ceiling genuinely is low. This wins on a narrow, real fit, which is the definition of the tier.

Why we rate Patriot Accounting a Strong Option
Patriot Accounting is rated Strong Option, alongside 9 other of the 26 general ledger & bookkeeping tools in this directory.
A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
