The read
What Uncat does
The Ask My Client account is the single most reliable source of month-end delay in a bookkeeping practice, and Uncat exists to drain it. Like RightTool, it is an add-on rather than a ledger: it connects to a client's existing QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop or Xero file, finds the transactions sitting uncategorized or flagged for review, and puts them in front of the client as a short list of questions. The client answers, attaches a receipt if one is needed, and the answers sync back into the ledger with the category and the document attached to the right transaction. Nobody writes the follow-up email, and nobody rekeys the reply.
Several design choices make it fit a firm rather than a business. Billing is $9 a month per client company with unlimited accountant users, unlimited client users, unlimited transactions and unlimited requests, so a firm running fifty clients has a predictable $450 monthly line and no incentive to ration who gets access. The firm holds the subscription and pays for it, which keeps control of the tool where it belongs and avoids the awkward conversation about a client cancelling a subscription the firm depends on. Multi-cardholder support routes charges to the person who made them rather than to a bookkeeper who then has to chase internally, which is the difference between one email and five for a client with a sales team on company cards. Existing auto-categorization rules keep working underneath.
The limits are worth stating. This solves one problem and does not pretend otherwise: it is not a client portal, not a document management system, not a workflow tool, and firms already running Karbon, Financial Cents or TaxDome will have overlapping client-request features they should decide about rather than stacking. Coverage stops at three ledgers, so a Sage or NetSuite client is out. The published security position is modest, describing SSL and OAuth and confirming Uncat has passed Intuit's technical and security reviews, with no SOC 2 report offered publicly and no MFA policy documented, so a firm with a formal vendor review process will need to write to the company for detail. Little is published about the vendor itself, and no founding date, funding or customer count could be confirmed from the site.
Nothing else in this category does the same job, which makes the comparison a question of build versus buy. The alternative is the status quo: a spreadsheet of open questions, an email thread per client, and a bookkeeper reconciling answers by hand. Some firms run that inside their practice management tool's client request feature, which works but usually lacks the two-way write-back into the ledger that removes the retyping.
Top-pick stands. The pricing is aimed at the firm rather than the client, the integrations cover the three ledgers most US firms actually use, and the workflow removes a specific, measurable cost from every close. The caveat is the same one that applies to RightTool: this rides on a ledger and does not choose one for you.

What it costs and what it connects to
Uncat starts at $9 per client/month (unlimited accountant and client users, unlimited transactions and requests at every client). Pricing is per client company, per month. A free trial is available: free trial available at signup.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Uncat from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.
Uncat connects to QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop and Xero. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.
