The read
What RightTool does
Start by being clear about what this is not. RightTool is not a ledger and does not replace one. It is a Chrome and Edge extension that loads on top of QuickBooks Online and changes how the interface behaves: a right-hand navigation bar, a universal search that will find a transaction by amount, roughly seventy keyboard shortcuts triggered from CTRL+ALT, and batch operations that QuickBooks Online itself does not offer. The free tier covers more than fifty of those. The paid tier adds the pieces a production bookkeeping team actually reaches for, including batch delete and batch edit in registers, transaction copying, bulk customer and project changes, reconciliation progress tracking, company switching and grouped favorites for hopping between client files.
The firm this suits is one where staff spend most of the day inside client QuickBooks files and the economics are hours. Pricing is built for exactly that reader rather than for the end client. RightTool PRO is $75 a month for the first user and $25 a month for each additional user, charged per QuickBooks Online login with no per-company fee, so a firm with 120 client files pays nothing extra for them. Firms above thirty staff can take a flat rate instead, $500 a month for up to thirty users or $1,250 a month for up to a hundred. There is a fourteen-day trial. The firm holds and pays for the subscription in every case, which is the right shape: this is a tool for the preparer, not something to hand a client.
The constraints are real. It is QuickBooks Online only, so a firm running a mixed book across Xero, QuickBooks Desktop or Sage gets no coverage on the rest of it. Being a browser extension means a QuickBooks interface change can break behavior until the extension catches up, and staff on locked-down machines need IT to allow the install. The vendor states plainly that it holds no SOC 2 report, reasoning that it does not access QuickBooks company data on its own servers, which is a defensible position but still an empty box if your firm's security questionnaire has a line for it. The AI features on the PRO tier, report analysis and bank categorization, are labelled experimental and should be treated that way.
Comparison is awkward because nothing else in this category does the same job. Uncat is the other add-on that sits on a ledger rather than replacing it, and the two solve opposite ends of the same month: Uncat gets answers out of the client, RightTool speeds up the person entering them. Neither competes with QuickBooks Online or Xero.
It holds top-pick. The reported install base of over 52,000 active users, a maintained free tier, an explicit firm price list and a documented shortcut reference all point to a product that is being run properly. It stays a top pick as an add-on, on the understanding that a firm still has to choose a ledger separately.
