The read

What Cone does

Two products are sold here, and the distinction matters when comparing prices. Cone Propose is the original: a proposal and engagement letter builder with templates, e-signature, pricing packages and payment collection. Cone Practice is the newer practice management module covering projects, tasks, time tracking, document management, a client request portal, integrated email and recurring billing. The link between them is the useful part. A signed proposal creates the project and the billing schedule automatically, so the engagement, the work and the invoice never drift apart the way they do when a firm runs Ignition next to a separate workflow tool.

The pricing is the headline and it is aggressive. Cone Practice starts at $5 per user per month on annual billing, with Essentials at $11 and Growth at $17. Cone Propose is $9 and $12 annually. A five-person firm running Practice Growth and Propose Growth together lands near $1,750 a year, against roughly $4,100 for the same headcount on Financial Cents Scale. Trials run 30 days on Practice and 14 on Propose without a card, and Cone offers free migration help. Payment collection goes through Stripe or GoCardless with no Cone markup on top of the gateway fee.

Several things are missing or unverifiable, and they are the reason for caution. No security page exists on the site: there is no SOC 2 statement, no encryption detail, no data residency disclosure and no trust portal, and the privacy policy is a short generic document that promises reasonable measures without naming any. For a firm handling client SSNs that is a real problem, and it has to be raised with sales before any data moves. There is no tax software integration, so return status is tracked elsewhere. There is no knowledge-based authentication for Form 8879 signing. The vendor publishes no founding year or team page, the site footer still reads 2025, and multiple archived and legacy pages sit in the public sitemap, which suggests a small team moving fast rather than a mature product organisation. Pricing is quoted in pounds first with dollar and Australian dollar equivalents, a sign the customer base leans outside the US.

Financial Cents and Client Hub both cost several times more and buy a track record, published security documentation and, in the Financial Cents case, direct connections to Drake, UltraTax and Lacerte. Uku is the nearer match on price and on the value-billing angle. Against all three, Cone's distinct claim is that proposals and practice management are the same system rather than two subscriptions stitched by Zapier, and the combined price is low enough that a firm can test it without a budget conversation.

One-to-watch is confirmed and is the right level of caution. The product is credible and the proposal-to-billing chain is genuinely well designed, but the absence of any security disclosure, any vendor history and any US tax integration means it is not something to hand a busy season to yet. It is worth a 30-day trial for the proposal and billing half, run alongside whatever the firm already uses for compliance work.

What it costs and what it connects to

Cone starts at $5 per user/month (Cone Practice: Starter $5, Essentials $11, Growth $17 per user per month billed annually, or $8, $16 and $24 monthly. Cone Propose: Essentials $9 and Growth $12 annually, $13 and $18 monthly. Add-ons for multiple signers and multiple pricing packages. Custom pricing above 20 users). Pricing is per user, per month, two separate products. A free trial is available: 30 days for Cone Practice, 14 days for Cone Propose, no card.

We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Cone from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

Cone connects to QuickBooks Online, Xero and Zoho Books. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.

Beyond that: Stripe, GoCardless, Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive, OneDrive and Zapier.
