The read

What Canopy does

Everything in Canopy hangs off a single client record. Contacts, entities, documents, engagements, tasks, time, invoices and portal messages all attach to the same file, and the firm then switches on the modules it needs. The base plans cover CRM, document management, the client portal, task workflows and invoicing. Tax Resolution, Close Automation and the tax workflow automation that reads a prior-year return to build the current-year job are priced separately on top. That structure is why two firms of the same size can pay very different amounts for the same login.

Day to day the pull is the portal and the document side. Clients upload through a branded portal or the mobile app, staff request specific documents and chase them from a queue, and e-signature with knowledge-based authentication handles Form 8879 without a separate DocuSign account. The tax software connectors matter more than most vendors' integration lists: UltraTax, Lacerte, ProSeries, ProConnect, Drake, CCH Axcess Tax and TaxWise all connect, plus an IRS transcript pull, so a firm does not have to keep return status in a second place.

The price is the real objection. Standard runs $74 per user per month billed annually, Plus $109 and Premium $149, and capacity planning and custom reporting sit on Plus rather than Standard. A six-person firm on Plus is at roughly $7,850 a year before any add-on, and Tax Resolution at $50 per user per month, KBA at $1.25 a credit and card processing at 3.30 percent plus $0.20 all land on top. Firms also report a long configuration tail: the client record is flexible enough that a firm that does not decide its taxonomy early ends up with several. Canopy is not the tool to buy a week before January.

Karbon is the closest competitor and thinks in terms of work and email triage rather than the client file, which suits firms whose bottleneck is internal handoffs more than client document collection. TaxDome bundles more into a flatter price and is stronger for high-volume 1040 shops, though its interface is denser. Financial Cents and Firm360 both undercut Canopy substantially and are the honest comparison for a firm under ten staff that does not need tax resolution or capacity planning.

Top-pick is confirmed. Canopy was founded in 2014, has more than 250 employees and cites 15,000 firms, publishes a SOC 2 Type II attestation with SSO through Google and Microsoft Entra ID, IP allowlisting and automated PII masking, and ships a current pricing page with named consumption rates rather than a contact form. Very few tools in this category clear all of those at once. The reservation is cost, not capability, and a firm should price the modules it will actually turn on before comparing.

What it costs and what it connects to

Canopy starts at $74 per user/month (Standard $74, Plus $109, Premium $149 per user per month billed annually; annual billing saves 20 percent; Tax Resolution adds $50 per user per month, Close Automation $10 per connected client per month after the first five, Smart Tax Workflow Automation from $34 per client credit, KBA $1.25 per credit; card payments 3.30 percent plus $0.20, ACH 1 percent capped at $10). Pricing is per user, per month, plus consumption add-ons.

Canopy holds a SOC 2 Type II report, multi-factor authentication is available, SAML single sign-on is supported.

Canopy connects to QuickBooks Online and Xero. Supporting more than one ledger matters for firms whose clients are split across them.

On the tax side it works with UltraTax, Lacerte, Intuit ProSeries, Intuit ProConnect, Drake Tax, CCH Axcess Tax and TaxWise, which covers most of what US firms run.

Beyond that: Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft 365, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, Salesforce, Zoho, Slack, Mailchimp, Calendly, Zapier and IRS Transcripts.
