The read
What Double does
Formerly Keeper, and still referred to by that name in places on its own site, Double began as a client-books review tool and has been extending outward from there. The core loop is unchanged and remains the best part. The product syncs two ways with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage Intacct or NetSuite, surfaces uncategorized transactions and unanswered questions, pushes those to the client through a branded portal, and writes the resolved coding back to the ledger. On top of that sit AI bank feed categorisation, drafted journal entries, accrual and prepaid schedules, 1099 tracking, receipt capture and custom management reports, all rolled up into a close page that shows every client's month-end status in one view.
The practice management half is newer and narrower. There is a client database with custom properties, saved filtered views in grid or Kanban form, task management, an integrated inbox and file review tools, plus a Tax Suite that adds 1040 organizers, tax workflows, year-foldered file storage and knowledge-based authentication e-signature for Form 8879. That last piece matters, because it means a bookkeeping firm doing a few hundred returns can sign inside the same system rather than buying a second one.
The trade-offs are worth pricing carefully. Double publishes no time tracking and no invoicing module, so a firm billing hourly or issuing invoices from its practice system still needs something else. There is no connector to Drake, UltraTax, Lacerte or ProSeries, so the Tax Suite works for firms preparing returns in a separate package and tracking status here, not for firms that want the two to talk. Pricing is per connected client with unlimited users, which is excellent for a small team carrying many clients and expensive in reverse, and the headline per-client rate is not published, so a quote requires a demo. The Tax Suite carries a $200 per month annual commitment. Security is documented in a plain statement rather than a populated trust portal: SOC 2 accreditation is claimed with a last-updated date of August 2024, US-only servers, AES-256 at rest, annual penetration testing, but the type is not stated and MFA and SSO are not mentioned.
Client Hub is the direct comparison and covers the same client-question loop at $59 to $79 per user per month, without the accruals, 1099 or AI journal entry depth. Financial Cents sells a month-end close add-on at $5 per client per month bolted onto a fuller practice management system with real tax integrations. Canopy prices close automation at $10 per connected client and has far more practice management around it, at several times the seat cost.
The inherited tier was top-pick in both categories. For close automation that holds: the two-way ledger sync, AI categorisation and close page are as strong as anything in that category, the company is Y Combinator backed and shipping constantly, with blog and customer story sitemaps updated in September 2026. For practice management it moves to strong-option, because a system with no time tracking, no invoicing and no tax software connector is not where a firm should start when choosing its system of record.

Our rating
Why we rate Double a Strong Option
Double is rated Strong Option, alongside 15 other of the 49 practice management tools in this directory.
A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
Double is also sold into month-end close automation , where it appears alongside the tools it competes with there.
