The read

What Drake Tax Online does

Drake's browser product shares a calculation engine with the desktop software and almost nothing else about how it is sold. There is no unlimited tier. The first user costs $299.99, each additional user $99, and every return is billed: $49.99 individual, $74.99 business, with volume discounts kicking in when 25 or 50 returns are bought upfront. Unused 2025 returns stay valid through the end of 2028, which softens the risk of over-buying. Run the arithmetic and the shape becomes obvious. At 150 individual returns the bill is roughly $7,800 before discounts, against $1,995 for the capped desktop package covering the same volume.

What the money buys is platform freedom. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Mac as readily as Windows, with no install, no update night before a deadline and no local backup regime. Entity coverage is wide for a cloud product: 1040, 1040-NR and 1040-SS, 709, 1065, 1120-S, 1120, 1041, 990 and 706, plus FinCEN Form 114, all state programs and selected city and local programs. Preparers who want the familiar Drake screens can install an optional desktop data entry mode alongside the browser interface.

The limitations are stated plainly by the vendor and deserve weight. That desktop mode is Windows-only, and for 2025 it is the route for 1120, 1041, 990 and 706 returns, so a Mac-only firm doing entity work is exactly the buyer this product appears to serve and exactly the buyer that constraint bites. Drake also says outright that features and functionality differ from the desktop version and points buyers at a comparison chart, which is an honest signal that this is not desktop Drake in a browser. The per-return economics mean the product punishes growth: a firm that doubles its 1040 count doubles its software bill, which is the opposite of what desktop Drake does.

The obvious comparison is Intuit ProConnect, the other browser-native professional package sold per return, and the choice there usually comes down to whether the firm's other tools are Intuit or Drake. Against desktop Drake Tax, the online version only makes financial sense below roughly 100 to 150 returns or where the platform requirement is non-negotiable. Against CCH Axcess Tax it is far cheaper and far narrower, with no shared document or workflow layer behind it.

One-to-watch stands. The pricing is published, the entity list is real and the engine underneath is proven, but this is a young delivery of a mature product with acknowledged feature gaps, a Windows dependency in the middle of a cross-platform pitch, and cost curves that make it hard to recommend to a growing firm. Worth tracking as the feature gap closes. Not yet the version of Drake a busy season should be bet on.
