The read
What BlueJ does
Ask a question in ordinary language, get a written answer with citations threaded through the text and a source list underneath, then export it to PDF or Word as the basis of a client memo. That is the whole of the Blue J interaction, and the value sits in what the citations point at. The database is primary US tax authority maintained by in-house tax editors and refreshed daily, supplemented by licensed Tax Notes news and commentary and IBFD international material. Naming the licensed content matters, because it means the analysis layer is not a model's paraphrase of something it read once. Documents can be uploaded and analysed against a question, and Blue J deletes those files automatically after 24 hours.
The buyer this fits is a US firm doing advisory and planning work where the research output becomes a deliverable. Federal and state coverage are both on the individual plan, so a multistate question does not require a second subscription. The published number is $1,498 per user per year, which is the useful fact: almost nobody in this category publishes a price, and a firm can size a two-seat or five-seat spend without a sales call. A Team plan adds a dedicated customer success manager, guided onboarding, firm-wide usage reporting and SSO with access controls, and is quoted per firm. Blue J reports over 6,000 firms and lists BDO, CPA Canada, NATP, cpa.com and Allinial as partners.
Where it comes up short is depth of the editorial layer relative to the legacy libraries. Blue J is a research answering machine, not a treatise service: there is nothing equivalent to Bloomberg's 200-plus Tax Management Portfolios or Checkpoint's editorial analysis for a practitioner who wants to read a chapter on a topic before asking a question. Nothing published explains what the system does when the authority is genuinely unsettled or absent, and the marketing pages that would answer that question talk about hours saved instead. There are no integrations with tax preparation or practice management software, so the workflow ends at an export. The individual price is also five times what Bizora charges and twenty times AskTomG, which matters to a two-person shop.
Compared with CoCounsel Tax, Blue J is independent of any compliance software vendor and publishes its price, where CoCounsel runs on Checkpoint content and is sold through Thomson Reuters. Compared with CCH AnswerConnect at $1,499 for the entry Tax package, the annual cost is nearly identical and the choice is between AI-first answering and a traditional editorial library with an assistant bolted on. Against Accordance and Bizora, Blue J is the one with the track record.
Top-pick is confirmed. The combination of a published per-seat price, SOC 2 Type 2 audited annually, named content partners, daily updates, a documented no-training commitment with its LLM providers, and a large installed base is unmatched by the newer assistants in this category, and it costs a fraction of an enterprise library contract.
