The read

What CoCounsel does

Thomson Reuters sells CoCounsel as one AI assistant across its legal and tax lines, and the tax build ships in two shapes. CoCounsel Tax is the fuller product aimed at research and client deliverables. CoCounsel Tax Essentials is the entry edition written for mid-market and smaller CPA firms. Both take a question in plain language and return a written answer with citations, plus document upload with automated summaries and a single search that runs across firm documents and tax authority at the same time. A separate CoCounsel Audit and Accounting build handles assurance workflows.

The thing that actually separates this from the independent AI research tools is what sits underneath. The Internal Revenue Code, the regulations, IRS releases and court opinions are public domain, so any startup can index them and cite them. Thomson Reuters is grounding answers in Checkpoint content, which is licensed editorial analysis that nobody else can index. Thomson Reuters states that Tax Essentials uses Checkpoint content without requiring a Checkpoint subscription, and describes the platform as SOC 2 Type II compliant.

The trade-off is stated plainly on the vendor's own order page, and it matters. Tax Essentials provides up to 20 citation-backed answers per week, and it does not include access to the Checkpoint Edge research library. So when an answer cites a Checkpoint analysis document rather than a code section, the underlying document may not open. The Tax Research module is a paid add-on to unlock that. Pricing is a second problem for a small firm: there is no published rate anywhere, only an order form and a sales line, so a five-person practice has to sit through a quote before learning whether this is a few hundred dollars a seat or a few thousand.

Against Checkpoint itself, CoCounsel Tax Essentials is the cheaper door into the same editorial library, with a weekly answer cap instead of a full research subscription. Against Marble and TaxGPT, the argument is authority: those tools cite primary law they indexed themselves, while CoCounsel can cite analysis a Thomson Reuters editor wrote and stands behind. Against Blue J, the comparison is narrower, since Blue J is also selling licensed content with an AI front end.

Strong option rather than top pick, and the inherited tier holds. The content pedigree is the best in this category and the SOC 2 Type II position is documented. What keeps it off the top spot for a 2 to 50 person firm is the combination of quote-only pricing, the 20-answer weekly ceiling on the affordable edition, and the fact that the citations in that edition can point into a library the subscription does not open. Firms already running UltraTax or Checkpoint will find the buying decision easier than firms coming in cold.

Why we rate CoCounsel a Strong Option

CoCounsel is rated Strong Option, alongside 6 other of the 13 tax research tools in this directory.
