The read
What Checkpoint (RIA) does
Every other product in this category is priced, positioned and pitched against this one, which is reason enough to understand what it actually is. Checkpoint is not a single application but an umbrella over several: Checkpoint Edge is the search platform, Checkpoint Catalyst is a set of transaction-oriented topic pages, and underneath both sit the RIA treatises, the PPC deskbooks and the Quickfinder handbooks that Thomson Reuters has published for decades. Edge takes a question in plain language across roughly 12 million expert-authored documents with primary sources threaded in, then lets a researcher narrow by clicking concept markers rather than rewriting a boolean string. State charts put multistate treatment side by side. Advisory Maps walk a planning engagement through its steps. Thomson Reuters says more than 680 editors, outside practitioners and contributors maintain the content, with seven news editors watching the IRS, Congress, the SEC and FASB.
The fit is a firm whose work regularly leaves a single-state 1040. Catalyst in particular is built for the question that has federal, state and US international consequences at once, which is where thinner libraries run out. A firm that files individual returns in one or two states will pay for a great deal it never opens.
Price is the honest problem. No product page carries a number; the route to one is a phone call to an 800 line. The store does publish enough to establish the scale: a one-day pass to the Core Accounting Service is $220 and a seven-day pass is $485, the Accounting and Financial Reporting Essential Library runs $5,008 a year, and the print RIA Federal Tax Coordinator alone lists at $10,184. What a five-preparer firm pays for tax research is negotiated, and negotiated pricing means the price partly reflects how well the buyer negotiates. The second problem is sprawl. Edge, Catalyst, Quickfinder, the PPC titles and the newer CoCounsel Tax products are separate purchases, and working out which combination covers a firm's actual questions takes a sales conversation rather than a comparison table.
Against CCH AnswerConnect, the closest rival, the content is comparable and the difference is commercial: Wolters Kluwer publishes $1,499 for its core tax package and Thomson Reuters publishes nothing. Bloomberg Tax Research competes on portfolio depth rather than breadth. At the other end, TheTaxBook answers most of the same day-to-day questions for $429, and a firm that reaches for Checkpoint twice a month should price that comparison seriously.
The inherited tier here was dated, and the evidence does not support it. Edge is actively developed, the AI search layer is real rather than a chat box bolted on, the editorial staffing is disclosed and large, and the store is current. Strong-option is the right place: a genuinely deep library that a US firm of 2 to 50 can buy, held back from a first recommendation by pricing that cannot be evaluated without a sales call.

Why we rate Checkpoint (RIA) a Strong Option
Checkpoint (RIA) is rated Strong Option, alongside 6 other of the 13 tax research tools in this directory.
A credible choice that wins on a specific fit rather than across the board — a price point, a niche, a workflow, or an integration the top picks do not cover as well.
