What Canopy Tax Resolution does

Resolution here is a module, not a product. Canopy sells a practice management platform covering CRM, documents, portal, workflow and billing, and Tax Resolution is an add-on inside it at $50 per user per month on top of a Standard, Plus or Premium seat. That framing decides most of what follows. The case record sits on the same client record as the 1040 engagement and the bookkeeping file, transcript pulls land in the same document store, and the 433 series questionnaires go out through the portal the client already uses for signing an 8879. Canopy covers collections work including installment agreements, offers in compromise, currently not collectible and lien and levy matters, plus penalty abatement and trust fund recovery, plus innocent spouse and allocation cases. The form library runs to about 230 federal and state documents and includes every state power of attorney, which is more state coverage than most of this category bothers with.

Transcripts come through the module and reach back twenty years. Like everything in this category, they are pulled under the firm's own CAF authorization and IRS e-Services credentials, so somebody at the firm has to hold a current e-Services login, and IRS registration for that runs through ID.me. That is the price of entry for the whole category rather than a Canopy limitation, but it is worth budgeting an afternoon for the first time.

The gaps are specific. Canopy does not file powers of attorney, so the 2848 or 8821 still gets submitted by hand or by fax before anything can be pulled. Nothing on the vendor's resolution or product pages describes transcript monitoring that alerts the firm when a new assessment posts, a lien goes pending, or a collection statute expiration date moves, which is the feature that earns its keep on an aging inventory of collection cases. The resolution evaluation runs collection calculations and recommends a path, but Canopy does not publish whether the reasonable collection potential engine applies the current IRS Collection Financial Standards automatically or whether allowable living expenses are hand-entered, and that distinction is where offers get computed wrong. Cost is the other issue. A three-person firm pays roughly $3,700 a year for Standard seats before resolution, then another $1,800 for the module, which is a lot if resolution is six cases a year.

Against IRS Solutions and PitBullTax the trade is platform versus depth. Both of those are built for resolution first, include or cheaply add transcript monitoring, and cost less in total for a small firm that does not need practice management. Canopy wins when the firm is already paying for the platform, because then the marginal cost is $50 a seat and the client record does not fork.

Strong-option is the right place and it stays there. The module is credible and the form coverage is real, but a firm buying resolution software on its merits alone would not start here, and the unpublished detail on monitoring and Collection Financial Standards is exactly the detail a resolution specialist would ask about first.
