The read
What Practice CS does
Time, billing and firm management inside the CS Professional Suite runs through Practice CS, a Windows program a firm installs on its own network. The core product tracks time and work in progress against the same client list UltraTax CS and Accounting CS use, and turns it into invoices. Three capabilities that most competitors treat as table stakes are sold as separate modules: Project Management for projects, tasks and due dates, Staff Management for schedules, assignments, benefits and comp time, and Client Management for logging client interactions. Client-facing work goes through NetClient CS portals and the UltraTax CS eSignature module. Firms that want browser access get it by having Thomson Reuters host the desktop software, either through Virtual Office CS or the fuller SaaS offering that bundles Microsoft Office and Exchange with the suite.
It is worth being precise about what is and is not happening here. Practice CS is actively sold and actively supported. Thomson Reuters lists it by name on its 2026 support hours page with its own busy-season exceptions, including a Saturday shift on 31 January, which is not how a vendor treats a product in wind-down. It is also, on Thomson Reuters' own suite page, filed under desktop, while Onvio Firm Management is filed as a separate cloud brand. Both statements are true at once, and a firm on Practice CS should read them together: the product is supported, and the vendor's cloud answer is a different product.
The weaknesses follow from that. Nothing is priced in public, so a firm cannot compare Practice CS plus three modules against a $59 per seat cloud product without going through sales. The modular structure means the practice management most buyers assume they are getting is three purchases, not one. Cloud access is somebody hosting a Windows app rather than a browser application, with the latency and printing quirks that implies. And the whole thing is worth having only if the firm also owns UltraTax CS or Accounting CS, because that shared client list is the entire argument.
The migration question is the one most Practice CS firms are actually asking. Staying inside Thomson Reuters means Onvio Firm Management, which is cloud-native and integrates UltraTax CS, Accounting CS and GoFileRoom, but which is likewise quote-only and thinner on workflow. Leaving means CCH Axcess Practice if the firm is also willing to move tax software to Wolters Kluwer, or Karbon, Canopy or TaxDome if it wants to keep UltraTax CS and put a modern workflow layer on top. That last route is the common one, and it is worth pricing before assuming Onvio is the default.
Dated is the right tier and is kept. This is the definition of the category: still sold, still supported, still working in hundreds of firms, and built on an architecture the rest of the market left ten years ago. A firm running it well has no emergency. A firm buying practice management fresh in 2026 has no reason to install a Windows application when the vendor's own alternative runs in a browser.

What it costs and what it connects to
Thomson Reuters does not publish pricing for Practice CS. Expect a quote based on firm size, user count, or number of entities.
We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Practice CS from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

Our rating
Why we rate Practice CS a Dated
Practice CS is rated Dated: it is one of 18 of the 49 practice management tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.
Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
