The read

What Accounting CS Payroll does

Very few payroll products are built on the assumption that the person running payroll is a staff accountant with forty client files open, and this is one of them. Accounting CS Payroll is the payroll module of Thomson Reuters' Accounting CS, licensed to the firm rather than to the employer. Work happens in batch: hours arrive by spreadsheet import or through remote entry, the firm processes a run across multiple client entities in one pass, and the software produces the federal, state and local filings, including 941, 940, W-2 and 1099, along with checks, direct deposit files or PayCard payments. Fee calculation and client invoicing for the payroll service are part of the product, which tells you who the intended operator is. Clients see results through NetClient CS portals rather than by logging in and running payroll themselves.

The commercial model is the cleanest in this category for a firm that wants margin. The firm buys the licence, sets its own price to the client, bills the client directly, and keeps the whole difference. There is no revenue share, no referral commission, and no vendor sitting between the firm and the engagement. That is the opposite of ADP Refer and Earn or the Paychex referral route, where the vendor owns the client afterwards. It fits a firm already running UltraTax CS, Practice CS and Virtual Office CS and has enough payroll volume to justify a per-firm licence and the training time. It does not fit a firm with six payroll clients, and it does not fit a client who wants a self-service app, mobile onboarding, or benefits administration attached to payroll. Thomson Reuters does not publish a price, so evaluation starts with a phone call and a quote.

The trade-offs are real. Pricing is opaque and negotiated. The delivery model leans on Virtual Office CS hosting rather than a browser-native application, and the surrounding suite carries the interface conventions of an older generation of practice software. Thomson Reuters markets Onvio as its cloud brand for firms yet publishes no roadmap statement or migration path connecting Accounting CS to it, which leaves buyers guessing about where the payroll engine sits in the company's plans. Security documentation for the product is not published on the page, so SOC reporting could not be confirmed either way.

The direct comparison is Payroll Relief, which does the same multi-client batch job with published per-client pricing and a cloud-first interface. Against ADP RUN for Partners or Gusto Pro the comparison is not like for like: those give a firm a dashboard over many separate client accounts, each run individually, rather than one engine that processes a book in a batch.

The inherited dated tier stands, and it stands on capability that is still genuinely good rather than on a broken product. Firms with a mature payroll book get real throughput here. But a product with no published pricing, no visible roadmap, a phone number as the primary call to action, and an ageing delivery model is difficult to adopt from a standing start in 2026.

What it costs and what it connects to

Thomson Reuters does not publish a price for Accounting CS Payroll; it is quoted per firm, usually on firm size or entity count.

We could not confirm a SOC 2 report for Accounting CS Payroll from public sources. Ask the vendor directly before it touches client data — an absence here means unverified, not absent.

Accounting CS Payroll does not integrate directly with a general ledger.

Our rating

Why we rate Accounting CS Payroll a Dated

Accounting CS Payroll is rated Dated: it is one of 5 of the 19 payroll & peo tools here that still works but is no longer keeping pace.

Still sold and still working, but no longer keeping pace — thin investment, an aging interface, or a roadmap that has visibly stalled. Fine to stay on, hard to recommend adopting.
